Lawson shines at Zandvoort, leaving Red Bull in a dilemma: Keep the in-form substitute or wait for Hadjar's recovery?

Zandvoort was the weekend when Liam Lawson had just one practice session before qualifying. Called up to replace Isack Hadjar, who had a wrist injury, Lawson still stayed close to Max Verstappen in qualifying. In his first race with Red Bull Racing, the New Zealander finished seventh and scored six points. For a team used to controlling the news cycle, that debut created the hardest thing to control: a seat selection problem. Hadjar's wrist injury forced him out of Zandvoort. Red Bull moved Lawson from substitute duty into the race seat, while Racing Bulls had to reshuffle. Yuki Tsunoda stepped into the Racing Bulls car, and Arvid Lindblad filled the remaining slot. In the standings, Hadjar has 68 points, 19 more than Lawson, but Lawson has raced only a few events under far more difficult circumstances. Ahead of them, Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli has 242 points, a significant gap over Verstappen's 112. That gap tells Red Bull they cannot afford to lose points because of a poorly managed driver decision. Juan Pablo Montoya immediately went on F1 TV with a strategic suggestion. He said Red Bull should keep Lawson for a few more rounds and not rush Hadjar back. Hadjar needs a couple more weeks to recover. Lawson should be properly prepared for Madrid, because the Madring circuit is a new track for everybody. That is not just a personnel opinion; it is a way to rethink the whole risk structure of the team. The key point is the word 'new'. On a circuit where nobody has real data, Hadjar's accumulated experience almost disappears. Hadjar has 68 points and consistent race weekends, but that will not help him read a completely unfamiliar surface faster. Lawson, by contrast, is in race rhythm. He has just spent a full race weekend with Red Bull, knows how the team operates, and already has a feel for the car. When every driver starts from zero in Madrid, the opportunity cost of keeping Lawson becomes smaller. Yet Lawson's performance must be measured by technical indicators, not emotions. In the modern era of racing cars, a new driver usually needs many sessions to absorb grip levels, setup range, and DRS behaviour. Lawson had one practice session and stayed close to Verstappen in qualifying. That suggests at least two things: Red Bull's simulator programme is helping the driver compress the learning curve, or the car has a setup window wide enough for an unfamiliar driver to extract performance. Both are good signs, but both can also lead the team to overrate Lawson's true ability. Looking at injury-replacement cases throughout the seasons I have followed, a substitute driver reaching that level so quickly is rare. But precisely because it is rare, the small-sample risk must be stressed. One weekend is not enough to say Lawson is ready for a long-term seat. If Red Bull keeps him at Monza and he makes a mistake, the story can reverse. If Hadjar returns too soon and is not fully fit, the team could lose the second car in the fight with Mercedes. Montoya is urging Red Bull to prioritise complete recovery. That is the logic of someone who understands that an unhealed injury can become a problem lasting many rounds. The blind spot is that the 'new track' argument is not clean. It works when comparing Hadjar's experience advantage against Lawson's, but it forgets that Lawson will also lose the advantage he just gained at Zandvoort. When everyone starts from zero, the difference will be in simulator preparation and adaptability. Red Bull is strong in both areas. So the real question is not only who should drive in Madrid, but whether the team dares to keep a driver in rhythm while protecting a driver who is recovering. There is also a third option being left open. Montoya praised Tsunoda for his aggression and error-free driving. Tsunoda has often been overlooked when Red Bull looked for a driver next to Verstappen. His performances at Racing Bulls during Lawson's promotion may force the team to reassess its entire priority order. Hadjar is injured, Lawson is hot, and Tsunoda is showing consistency. Lindblad is waiting behind them. Four names are competing for two seats in the Red Bull system, while the 2026 regulation change approaches. Monza this weekend will be the second experiment. If Lawson again stays close to Verstappen, Red Bull will struggle to justify bringing Hadjar straight back at Madrid. If Hadjar is not medically cleared, the decision becomes even simpler. But if Lawson struggles at Monza, the debate will quickly reverse. Then the team may choose the safe route: return the seat to Hadjar and treat Zandvoort as a lucky moment. Nobody says Monza will provide a definitive answer. But that race will show whether Red Bull is managing drivers by system or by emotion. If they truly trust data, they will need more time. If they are reacting to an empty seat, they will rush. A big team cannot let an injury define its identity. They need to decide based on who scores the most points, who is healthiest, and who will help them enter the 2026 era with a stable line-up. Madrid is where everything will be exposed, but Monza is where the answer begins.
